Throughout the week, I’ll share the meaning of the book’s title and subtitle. Today, I’ll explain the title, A Test for Our Time, through quotes from a Polish poet and an American civil rights leader:
“We know ourselves only as far as we’ve been tested.” This is a line from a poem by the late Polish Poet Wisława Szymborska, and it’s something that has always stuck with me. It’s easy to think that we know ourselves well, but the truth is, we can only truly know ourselves through our actions and reactions under pressure. That’s why it’s so important to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and challenge ourselves regularly. Otherwise, we’ll never really know what we’re capable of or how we’ll react in difficult situations.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in the moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” The words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continue to inspire people around the world, even long after his death. His quote about the ultimate measure of a man is one that particularly resonates with many, as it speaks to the importance of character and integrity. In a world where so much emphasis is placed on appearances and surface-level things, it can be easy to forget what truly matters. It takes courage and strength of character to stand up for what you believe in, even when it’s unpopular or goes against the grain.
